Total studio size (undergrad & grad tuba and euphs) is around 12 to 14. Only one tuba freshman this fall (only one last year, too), not as sure about euph numbers. As you may well imagine, competition to get into ASU in tuba is extremely fierce.

While you really should hear the following directly from Sam, I feel safe in saying that for students Sam wants "musicians" who are strong in both jazz and band/orchestral music. Many if not all of his most recent undergrad students have varied musical backgrounds that go beyond the traditional "orchestral and band" tuba background; examples of some recent tuba students include backgrounds in jazz and big band trombone, jazz piano and jazz/classical double bass. Call or write him to learn more about the program.

For a student with the "right stuff" (one with a strong and varied musical background and also with the proper motivation and goals), it is an amazing place to grow as a musician and a person.

Good luck.
