I've tried to use lighter (cheaper) horns while marching when I was in college and discovered that if I am going to be playing, I want to play the best I can. For me, that meant using a good horn while marching. I use my Besson 967 on the field while marching today. I've been in the Army bands for eight years now and have always used my heavy Besson rather than get a lighter horn.
I don't use the fourth valve while marching though. I support the horn with the right hand and hold the music (I hate lyres) with my left while supporting a little weight with my pinkie or ring finger. It works for me, but I'm... uh... older and have little problem with the weight.
You might rig a strap on the horn, unless there are movements that a strap would prevent.
Good luck. I'm sure your section leader won't do you wrong.
