I'm in the EXACT same boat, man, and I can say that I know exactly where you're coming from. I've had many suggestions to rid myself of the "cheater embouchure"- buzzing being #1, Lip slurs out the wazoo a close 2nd, and strengthening the low register being the third most popular. I do those when I practice, but not enough- My comfort range is extending, though.
To see exactly where you are, just play a slow C scale (starting 2 ledgers below the staff) changing your embouchure as little as possible... try to do this without shifting at the top. Then do lip slurs around that "shift point". I'm not saying live and die by lip slurs, but just do them until the note at that shift point is comfortable without shifting. Keep workin' up, and you'll probably start feeling more adequate as time goes on... Hope I could help! =^)
