The tuba will sound like YOU sound. I promise you that once a critical listener becomes familiar with your playing, they can identify YOUR sound on ANY tuba - if placing you and another player of similar abilities behind a screen with ANY selection of tubas.
The issue really is that most F tubas stink. I blindly lucked into a good one, but at least was barely clever enough at the time (almost 20 years ago) to recognize that and to keep the instrument. Shop and play for awhile and find a treasure. Don't forget to thank those whose instruments you are allowed to audition. Please keep an open mind and find the one that amplifies YOUR sound (again, again, again: "German-Schmerman") and with a good scale.
