And one note on the acoustic effects: There was some study done on the sound differences between metal plating, air-dried traditional lacquer, and chemically hardened lacquers such as epoxy. Differences were noted between the first two (which were the same), and the latter. But the work was done on trumpets, which in my opinion doesn't translate well to tubas. I have never been able to tell the difference between lacquered, unlacquered, and silver-plated horns, even when played by good players. On the other hand, I like the looks of silver instruments, even though I don't own any, and if you have the money, that's a good enough reason to have it.
