The valuable aspect to mentioning that the couple came from modest means was to point out that good behavior wasn't tied to economic standing. What I get from that is that folks who have to work for everything they get tend to have a better appreciation for it and respect for than those who can take it for granted.

It would be easy to know they came from the inner city without making racially based assumptions. Most parents who are buying musical instruments for their kids will mention what school they attend, or the name of their band director, or something like that. Rather than looking for a way to accuse our anonymous poster of uttering a racial euphemism, I had just taken that at face value and moved on. What gives the concept of political correctness life is that there are people who look for ways to be offended by things that are said, and sit idly by as far worse things are done.

So, both parties would do well to think about what they said and meant.
