Lava soap is the cheap, easy, and SAFE way to go. There is enough "grit" in the soap to do the job VERY slowly. Wipe and check every five minutes or so. I've usually been satisfied after two five minute sessions per slide. I've done it on many horns and haven't messed one up yet!
