When I was in school, we weren't given the choice. If you wanted to play in the band during football season, you did it on the field. No concert band music 'til it was time to prepare Sleigh Bells again.

I play a CC in a band next to a guy with a BBb, and it seems to work fine. It'd really be a shame if the different-pitched horn made you listen more closely to blend and intonation than before. ;^)

And Dale is right on this one. Not all are guilty, but there is an enormous amount of dis-information about playing the tuba being taught to aspiring band directors. I have heard band directors teach tuba just like trumpet or trombone. One of the myths is that marching band won't trash your chops (and your shoulder) if you aren't careful. It will. You just have to be even more aware of good sound and playing practices when you are trying to move the stadium back three feet.
