Stick to your guns, and get your private lesson teacher to go to bat for you. It's really important that you don't let your band directors unfounded fears stand in the way of your development.
It's like this. If every sax player in the band had a Yamaha student line horn (yes, I know, they are not that bad), and the 1st alto shows up with a Selmer Mark VI, would the band director tell the best player to leave the good horn at home and bring in the Yamaha? Of course not.
I had a student once who got a CC tuba, and the band director said "I don't want him transposing his band music at contest, so he is not allowed to play a CC tuba" It took about 6 weeks of explaining for him to understand that a CC tuba is not the same as a C trumpet, and this guy had been an awad winning band director for 20 years. He was not some fresh faced rookie.
