Like you say this would be the starting point for consideration of a Tuba purchase or for any purchase for that matter. This is exactly how most manufatures sell there horns. The sales hoopla you speak of comes from the retailers who's job it is to entice you to buy.

Poor Randy's method for buying anything....
1.Decide wether it is a necessity or a luxury.
2.Tryout or determine the items' ability to deliver the proposed service or effect and wether there will be service after the sale or warranty.
3.Assess my ability to pay for or willingness to pay for something.
4.Decide to purchase or not accordingly.
