If the mpc. is touching his face directly (in addition to just the lips), this could cause an allergic reaction, particularly if, as others have mentioned, the mpc. is worn or contains nickel (I have a nickel allergy which is fairly common.)

It's also possible that he may be handling other worn parts of his instrument and then touching his face. The skin on the face is often more sensitive, so if there are worn spots on his horn, he might be handling those areas with no problems until he touches his face, which is a common action for brass players e.g. wiping mouth etc.

Petroluem jellies and the like probably wouldn't be the best solution in my experience; though "I'm a player not a doctor."
