I agree with what "A Plea" said. Perhaps the suggestion will be takem more seriously from a non-anon poster (-: Try (first) more light on your music. In dim light (like on a stage or orchestra pit) your eyes do funny things with ledger lines, making it difficult to quickly tell how many there are. Second, get your eyes checked. In my case, it turned out that I needed very mild prescription glasses - but what a difference it made! Needless to say, it saved me many frustrating hours in the practice room.

After you've turned up the light & had your eyes checked, then hit the woodshed with the low etude books to get your mind up to speed. If you can't see how many ledger lines there are, you won't get any better without fixing the real problems first.
