I'd recommend getting the Blood, Sweat and Tears album Live and Improvised. It has an incredible track on it that features tubist Dave Bargeron playing a 4 minute improvised funk/rock solo. It was originally recorded in the mid to late 70s. Dave Bargeron also plays with Howard Johnsons jazz tuba ensemble Gravity. I've also read that Dave Bargeron does the recording work on Sesame Street and is the tubist that does the actual playing for Telly monster when he plays his tuba.
