My first message was garbled.

The difference is in the proportion of conical tubing to cylindrical tubing. In the 'trumpet world,' the flugelhorn has the most conical tubing. The actual order of increasing proportion of conical tubing is: trumpet < cornet < flugelhorn. In the 'baritone world' the order is: trombone < baritone < euphonium. The change in tone quality is analogous. The trombone is the brightest, the baritone is intermedicate and the euphoniumis the darkest and most mellow.
