Dear Klaus, your answer is priceless. Some also refer to the instrument as a "baritone horn", which is no more a horn (if you ask the fr*nch horn players, anyway) than an English or Basset horn.

I propose Baryphonion--the linguistic source corrected back to Greek and descriptive of the function--maker of deep sounds. (From βαργ- and φονος).

Either that, or "itty bitty tuba".
