It's generally accepted that a euphonium is more conical (more of the tube is expanding) and a baritone is more cylindrical (more of the tube is not expanding) when compared with each other. Your teacher may realize that most "American Baritones" are, in fact, euphoniums. Have a look at the article on David Werden's site to help clear it up for yourself.
