. . I submit that the Mehta/L.A. recording is not a particularly outstanding recording of the Planets. Still, it's a bargain purchase. However, I think one can get better "Planets" from Adrian Boult (his last one on EMI, coupled to his last "Enigma Variations"); Andre Previn's first one with the LSO (EMI); Dutoit/Montreal Symphony (Decca); Yoel Levi/Atlanta Symphony (Telarc); William Steinberg/BSO (on DG Originals, coupled to an equally hot performance of "Zarathustra"); John Elliot Gardner/Philharmonia (DG - coupled to Percy Grainger's "The Warriors"); Ormandy/Philly (Sony Essential Classics); Karajan/VPO (Decca Legends - it's his earlier VPO one); and bringing us back to the L.A. Phil.: Leopold Stokowki (EMI - coupled to an excellent stereo "Verklaerte Nacht" by Schoenberg).
