I started out on trumpet (mea culpa), then didn't play anything for about 15 years. Then I saw the light and got myself a tuba. It was an Eb. I played on that for a few years, then didn't play much anything for a couple years. When I wanted to start playing again, I found that the sound of the F tubas really matched the sound in my head, so I got one. I currently travel too much to take regular lessons, so I'm pretty much teaching myself. I use the Rubank books, which work just fine, even though they're geared to Eb and BBb players.

There seems to be too much mystique around the F. It's just another horn with some different fingerings and a different sound. It's easier to play higher, and I don't find it more difficult on the low notes.

I'm not particularly small, but I also prefer it's size for playing.

Tell her to go for it!
