Depends on your definition of "affordable"....
My instrument of choice would be either the ART Tube MP (if you're recording monaural) or the ART Dual MP (if you're recording to stereo). The Tube MP is about $100 and the Dual MP is about $200-250. They are tube preamps, so they do tend to color the sound slightly; they both offer enough control that you can lessen the effect if it troubles you (Personally, I like it - it adds body and "life" to the usually sterile sound of pure digital recording). Anyway, these are high quality, good sounding units that improve the sound of virtually anything you pass through it. Check 'em out!
