Okay, this is rough, but: the RIGHT thing to say is the TRUTH. It may mean you pay a price, but those are the breaks.
The recruiter may just not want to do the paperwork that goes with a 'yes'. Two years later, how do you know the truth won't come out and cause you problems? Do you think the recruiter will admit prompting that 'no' answer, or will he hang you out to dry? I wouldn't expect a recruiter who encourages a recruit to lie to fall on his sword.
It's scary to be a grownup. Tell the truth, and let the chips fall where they may.
