There are quite a few Mirafone 186's in school systems. Typically at a school, some band director decades ago really "took the plunge" and tried to buy the best tuba they could. Many, if not most, of these tubas have "el-smash-o-ed" and "el-crack-o-ed" bells, due to severe abuse and neglect. NEW Miraphone bells are quite expensive, and are 1 1/4" larger in diameter than the originals, requiring ALSO the acquistions of new cases, along with the bell replacements and labor, making bell replacement jobs on these instrument quite expensive.

As a decent econo repair, has anyone tried shoving a new Jupiter 16 1/2" diameter bell on an old Mirafone 186? If so, is the bottom diameter fairly close? How is the overall length...within in inch or so of a Mirafone?

Matt...?
