Interesting, some TRUMPETS play better in tune AFTER large dents have been removed from their bell section crooks. The original prototypes of trumpets (probably) had perfectly round tubing in their crooks, but most all production trumpets have somewhat ovaled crooks, due to the bending process not being a perfect operation. However, once (perfectly round circumference) dent balls have been forced underneath the dents in a trumpet bell crook, the crook's tubing ends up being round. Many players have remarked that certain notes (open "e" in particular) were far less trouble to lip in tune than when their trumpets were new.
