I also echo Rick's comments. I did not play in the first group he mentioned, but did for the other two. I occasionally play in one of the other bands, that one of the guys he mentioned is conducting. The only other way to tolerate it is, we are a German community band and allowed (or encouraged) to drink beer during rehearsal. From a conductor's stand point, it's hard finding an acceptable middle road between insisting on something and realizing the limitations of key players, while still fulfilling the "mandate" of the group. I know all of the arguments about quality attracts; mediocracy repels, etc. In most cases that is true, in some cases we just have to suffer from delusions of adequacy until something better comes along.
