Yes, audition for a specific band first and make it in before singing anything. Keep an eye out for openings through your recruiter, college professors, music publications, etc. The best way is to earn the spot first, then start the enlistment process.

In my case, I happened to talk to a SSgt from the USMC D&B Corps, and he gave me info to connect with their own recruiting officer. We set up an audition while they were on a trip, I got the acceptance letter a month later, and later I went to a local recruiter and got started. Every step of the way, I made sure that the local recruiting & enlistment officers were in touch with the D&B.

I ship to boot camp in Septermber, and I'll be rehearsing with the D&B by January. Should be interesting; every once in a while I'm reminded that I have a career waiting for me. I'm pretty lucky, I'd say.
