I tried that once on the brass tuning crooks on an old Besson satin silver horn. I used hobby-store lacquer specifically made (according to the label) for brass. The brass turned green in about six months.
Of course, getting it really clean is not one of the lighter matters, and no telling whether I did that well enough.
