The problem with polishing the bare brass is that you will have to keep doing it over and over in order to keep it shiny, and Brasso is like sandpaper. If your going to polish the silver and the bare brass you would be better off using Hagerty's,which has a tarninsh inhibitor in it. It has enough strength to brighten the bare brass yet is not too strong for the silver plate, and with the inhibitor you don't need to polish as much. It's really over-polishing that kills the finish on any horn. As far as the weight of the horn goes, don't underestimate the damage that a heavy sousa can do, (I speak from experience!). Just get it off your shoulder as much as possible when you stop playing.
