I don’t think that our concepts have changed so much just the instrument choices that are available to us. One reason some of us old farts change after 20 plus years is that 25 years ago all we had to choose from was Mirafone, Alexander or Rudy. (In 1975, when I was a student, Hirsbrunner and Tucci were just starting their famous collaboration) For me the choice was simple: Mirafone. Mirafone was based in LA so I went to the distributor with Jim Self after a lesson and we picked one out of a new shipment. On the East coast tubaists played Alexanders because Giardinelli was the distributor. We just didn’t have many choices.

Now there are so many good instruments that it can be hard to decide what to play!
