Joey,
Nirschl and Hirsbrunner York copies are in the $14000-$15000 range, and are intended to be used with large orchestras. Although Arnold Jacobs played his big Yorks for just about everything, he WAS Arnold Jacobs, and he, mostly, played with the Chigago Symphony Brass section when he was not playing with the entire orchestra. A 4/4 tuba will be much more versatile, and you will probably need an F or Eb tuba before you need a 6/4 horn.

It is true that playing these horns is a lot of fun (I took a lesson, yesterday, with two new Nirschl York copies and a Holton 6/4 York copy --- talk about hog heaven), and they are much more versatile than other 6/4 horns but, unless the quintets at your future college like being drowned by the tuba, you will need something smaller.

Why not call the tuba professor or professors at your prospective school(s) and ask for their recommendation of a suitable CC tuba?
