I find the appearance requirement rather snooty. Too bad for them to rank appearance so highly. If there really is no other way around it, then renting or borrowing a shiny tuba would be the way I would go.
But, there might be a way to turn this in your favor. Imagine saying, "This is obviously an elite musical ensemble, and I must be a really good player to earn the spot while playing on such a beater instrument. Besides, I'm picky enough about what I play, and this old tuba does the job just the way I want."
Of course this is all just my opinion...
