The northwestern shore of the southern peninsula of Michigan just a few miles from Lake Michigan. It is the "grand daddy" of all high school summer music camps. It was established in the 1920's by an incredibly insightful and bullishly determined man named Joe Maddy.

Now, thousands of high school, junior high, and middle school musicians of promise attend each summer forming swarms of bands, orchestras, choruses, dance troupes, and dramatic organizations, not to mention their extensive VISUAL arts programs. The "elite" high school orchestra at the summer camp is the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. The WYSO mostly consists of students who have applied for an won the Emerson Governor's Scholarship for their state (full tuition award). Since the early 1960's there has ALSO been an Interlochen Arts Academy, which is a regular 9-12 grade boarding school (school year) offering a very intense academic and arts education. Many of the music majors who graduate from the Academy go on the music conservatories, as indeed an Interlochen diploma will at least attract the serious attention of the admissions departments of the top conservatories, as many of the top conservatories actually send auditioners TO the Academy to audition students for admission.

The cost of the summer camp (8 weeks) is about $4000 or so plus tranportation and miscellaneous expenses. The tuition for the Academy (which includes room and board) is about $25000 per school year. The Interlochen institution has an abundance of scholarship money available for deserving students in need. Often, up to 50% if they are convinced of a student's need and/or potential.

' too much more to say. I'm sure you can find their informative website. There is an information/recruiting weekend in April for the Academy each year, if you would like to visit.
