A long time ago, one of the French horn manufacturers had a hole right down the center of the stem and another hole in the bearing area of the stem 90 degrees to the other hole and meeting up with it. That allowed one the REALLY oil the bearing well. The only problem seemed to be that dirt would work its way down there and actually make the stem tolerance wear faster than normal. Your idea, however, seems like a good one.
