A lot of times when instruments that are quite new have a lot of failing solder joints, it is because their manufacturers have emersed these instruments in an electrically-charged solution that removes excess solder from joints to cut down on buffing time. (I've heard a lot of band directors blame busted solder joints on instruments with HUGE dents in them on "bad workmanship". That's not exactly fair.) If instruments are left in a solution such as this for too long, the solder joints UNDER the brace flanges (the parts that you want to stay intact!) start to look like Swiss cheese.
