Phil,
Remember that virtually ALL drum and bugle corps tuba players are pretty darned excellent, and can get an "AAAAA" sound out of "AA" or "AAA" equipment (contras).

On the other hand, MANY high school tuba players and some marching band college players (who often play sousaphones) are NOT that outstanding.

Further, I don't favor just ANY sousaphone. In particular, a Conn 14K in good condition. ("thumbs down" to Jupiter, King, Yamaha, et al)

There will be no opportunity to do this, but take your talented corps bass section and compare THEIR results on the best set of contras that you can come up with and then hand them a set of 14K's. (Stand back.)
