In my experience, back in high school, when all the tubists started doubling, most of the real social band activities happened in the jazz band. We also had a band director who liked to use tubas "ocassionally" (can't spell tonight) in the jazz band. So all of our tuba players, being pretty outgoing guys and gals, ended up doubling on something in jazz.

I took up trombone (and covered the tuba parts, including a solo), Greg played guitar, and brenda covered some percussion and some 3rd and 4th trumpet (if I remember correctly).
After I left, my younger brother did the tuba and bass trombone thing.

So in our neck of the woods, doubling was all about jazz, man, jazz.
