Probably because a lot of started music early, say 3rd grade and there was nothing in a group to play in to use a tuba and the tuba is bigger than we were then. So we took up piano or trumpet or alto sax, maybe clarinet. By the time we got to high school where there was a band to use a tuba there were far more upper brass and wind players than chairs in the band room so we had to switch to tuba or not play. Somewhere along the way we discovered we loved playing notes we could FEEL with our whole body and liked the tuba despite the need for stevedoring it about from place to place.

Finally in college I got to play in the orchestra, but soon found the tuba plays once in a while, part of the time, in orchestra works so I had to learn to count reliably to large numbers. So I took up double bass to play more. Today I play double bass mostly, tuba a little, and percussion a little.
