Comparing rotary valves to pistons is somewhat like comparing string bass to electric bass. Which one is superior? What is your playing situation? If I'm going to play with an R&B band, I'd tend to take an electric, whereas for big band or orchestra, I'd take the other, of course. If I were looking for a horn to primarily play band music on, I'd tend towards a piston valve instrument, whereas if it were to be primarily an orchestral horn, rotors would work just as well. As others wrote, find a horn you enjoy and play it! I played band music professionally for 15 years on a rotary CC, then tried a piston BBb and found that it made life easier. Find what works!
