I am a recreational player and I just replaced my horn. I went to two places (The Tuba Exchange and the Woodwind/Brasswind) to try horns. I tried 13 horns with the following criteria:
1). It had to be better than what I had, i.e. I sounded better, easier to play, better intonation, etc.
2). The level of improvement had to justify the expense of the change.
3). I didn't want to change keys (CC to BBb) unless it was a super horn.
Those criteria eliminated the first 12 horns and it really wasn't very difficult to make those decisions. The 13th met all of the criteria plus my wife (who went with me both times) loved it. It didn't take much selling on her part!
