An improvised tool that I have used for many years to check mouthpiece fit is a vernier caliper that can measure the depth of a slot or hole. I measure how far the mouthpiece shank extends into the receiver, then measure the distance to the leadpipe inside the receiver and compare the two distances. It's not rocket science, but it will tell you if the mouthpiece fit is at least close. If not, the horn and mouthpiece goes to a repair tech. In a pinch (when I can't find my vernier), I have used lengths of thick wire and marked measurements on them with a file. Weapon of choice here is coat-hanger wire. When you're done with the wire, it makes great welding rod!
