I would have stuck with my used tuba if I decided to not get into playing and finished up a physics or engineering degree instead. But then, if I got a career like that, I'd have more than enough cash to splurge on a different tuba! :-) As it is now, I can't afford to do anything like that, and I needed to have my ideas completely solid before I could justify a purchase like that. It got to the point where I could use either a new tuba or a new (used) car, and since my little '86 Honda has probably got another 5+ years in it and I had only two years left before I graduate (hopefully) & play some auditions, the new horn got priority.

I still keep my old one because, for example, I just don't feel safe in a boat on a trailer in a Labor Day parade with my pretty new one!
