But, I'll stand by my point, which really was to not totally believe what you hear on a recording. Anything can be made to sound any way you'd want -- except, of course, you can't make a bad group sound good. Unless you have the engineering budget of Backstreet Boys... :-)

I have one of those albums (only one, though), and honestly, it really does sound artificial and over-engineered. It's one of those examples where you can hear the mixer moving the sliders around, and I hardly listen to it any more; great playing, ugly recording. I've never heard them live either, so I can't say myself what they were like, and I'll take your word. I do hope that some of the sections really were not playing that unbalanced, with 1st chair players burying their sections (horns especially). Or maybe it was a bad session. Who knows -- mine is gathering dust anyway.
