As I recall the story, Sumner was rejected from the get go based on the paucity of his resume. It took some mighty convincing from his teacher at Curtis (Krszwycki?)to even get heard. Apparently, he was not the obvious choice then, either, except to Andre Previn, who sort of fought for him.
Anyone who has heard him lately will gladly back up Previn in his decision.
