Bass trombonists do it all the time. Just as the tuba used to, and still does to some extent, suffer from lack of good rep, the bass trombonists have it even worse. They have to steal from other instruments sometimes to find literature which more fully exploits their characteristic sound. The stuff for bass tuba usually falls in the exact same range as most of the bass trombone stuff. Works out well. When I was a student at Northwestern I heard a fellow student perform the Capricio by Penderecki on bass trombone and felt it to be one of the more interesting renditions I had heard.

I still believe the tuba library for contrabass tuba is lacking compared to that for bass tuba. There is so little "good" music for the larger tuba compared to the higher pitched horns.
