I play a 3400 and the upper range is just fine. I have played it next to the Besson 983 and the PT22. On both of those horns I was able to play about a half step or so higher than on the willson. For me and the type of Eb tuba I was looking for. The advantages the Willson has over the other two more than make up for a slightly more difficult upper register. My 3400 likes the 5,1 combination for the upper G# an octave above the staff. I had trouble with that note until a friend showed me that combo and it works very well.

The valves work very well. I think they are about on par with most other piston valves tubas I have played. I also play a 3050 and recently replaced the 3400 valve springs with the extra set that came with the 3050. The new ones are slightly shorter and tapered and it seemed to lighten the valves up a bit.

I hope this helps.
