Ever tried to play a sousaphone without the bell?

I have done that with my Conn 26K Eb sousa, which plays just about in F without the bell.

No pretty sound, but very effective in playing a driving rhythm. Somehow is reminded me of the old-fashioned way to play marching band tuba, which I heard during my post-WWII childhood spent in Germany.

Last time I heard that sound was when I tested the small Jupiter 3TP BBb tuba in 1999. That instrument is popular in the all-girls marching bands of which we have some good ones (especially those which allow their members to stay well into their twenties in contrast to those having a fixed age limit at 18 or 20 years).
