The song has always been called "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" as far as I know. It was a big hit for the Buckinghams in 1967, who despite their name, hailed from Chicago. It was written by Joe Zawinul while he was in Cannonball Adderly's band in the 1960's and they released it on a recording in 1966. No idea who wrote the lyrics.
