The Schillke 67 I have was made this way "stock". Tapered very thin & open at the end.
Others have done this mod to helleburgs & such for the Gap-less leadpipe you describe. I think it does have an impact upon response similar to slight opening the backbore of a mouthpiece - a little more "open" response particularly in the low register. Could be a negative on some horns, positive on others.
. . . and yes, more vulnerable if dropped on the shank.
