I'm a tuba performance major in college right now. Memorizing is a mixed bag. Usually when I memorize, I am more free to concentrate on the music, rather than having my head buried into the stand. But unless you're a pianist, what's the point in memorizing:-) I only memorize when I'm playing for a competition. It really doesn't make too much of a difference for me. However, memorizing is a very important skill that you will definitely need -- so I understand your teacher encouraging you to memorize. Good luck on the solo; that's a tough piece. Kudos to you for having the talent in junior high school to play such a demanding piece of music.
