One advantage of playing horn and trumpet mouthpieces periodically is that it forces you to focus your embouchure to the center. Especially practicing low notes on the french horn. It forces you to stay relaxed in the center but focused and maintain your corners without relaxing the corneres and cheeks. I have noticed over the past 15 years or so of teaching elementary band and playing these instruments occassionally (with students, not in public mind you)my tone and accuracy on trombone and tuba have improved alot. Would it have gotten better just by playing the trombone and tuba the same amount? I do not know. I just know it helped the light come on for me.
