When I was in high school and only had to play high school level music, doubling helped me greatly. Playing tuba helped me use more air, trumpet helped my high register, horn helped me center notes, etc. But when I got to college and needed to play music at a higher level, I found that switching mouthpiece, changing air streams, etc., made matters worse more than they helped. Doubling will help a little in the short run, but in the long run doubling isn't going to help your playing at all.
