One of my students has an older Hirsbrunner CC with the "tuning slide in leadpipe" setup and we found this tuba plays better than some of the newer ones. I guess there are good and bad horns with this setup. I find more and more that there are no easy answers to what makes a horn play well or not. I recently picked up an old beat to heck King detachable BBb, (talk about ugly!)and the horn plays beautifully despite numerous dents, some leaks, broken braces, etc. Like the old saying goes, "you can't make a bad horn good and you can't make a good horn bad". Guess it depends on a combination of factors some known and alot unknown.
